Our blog will be a way for us to journal our planning for and traveling of the Pan American highway and beyond. We are planning to drive to the southernmost point in the world, aside from Antarctica.
About a year or so after Laughlin and I met, we discussed the idea of traveling somewhat extensively but we didn’t really know what we were going to do. Having finished up my fifth tax season, I was a little burned out and Laughlin began to show interest in living somewhere else. We determined that the best time to leave Casper would be fall 2016, which would give us time to leave our employers in good shape, sell the house, get married, and depart, but we still didn’t know what we were going to do. Our imaginations began to open up and as we thought about the possibilities before us. We discussed spending a couple of months in Mexico, traveling around the United States, backpacking through Europe, etc. but it was all just general discussion with no commitment. Our discussions did have one thing in common; we wanted to do something big!
About the same time, I came across Expedition Portal and began reading some great articles which instilled a sense of adventure in me. Many of the articles covered trip reports on everything from four wheel drive trips to bicycling to camping and vehicle modification. The website had me hooked and I spent many early Saturday and Sunday mornings browsing the forums. I became infatuated with overlanders who wrote blogs covering their experiences traveling the Pan American Highway. After some time, I mentioned the trip to Laughlin who initially had no idea what I was talking about and thought I was a bit crazy, but after showing her some blogs and talking about how awesome it would be, she became (almost) as obsessed as me. We decided that this was going to be our big adventure. We decided with big adventure comes big planning…..
Since the day we made our decision, we have accomplished a lot to position ourselves to make a trip like this happen. We have sold a house, bought a vehicle for the trip, got married, got immunizations, given our resignations at work (October 14), put all of our possessions in storage, and many other smaller but time consuming things. There are still so many things left to do to prepare for our departure date in one month and we can’t believe it is almost here but we are excited to begin our adventure!
In the next few blog posts, we will document our vehicle selection, vehicle and camper preparation, general planned route and try to document the last several months as best we can. We hope you enjoy our blog!
